The Great Wave off Kanagawa by Hokusai

This is an SVG recreation of the famous Japanese woodblock print "The Great Wave off Kanagawa" by Katsushika Hokusai, created around 1831.

Features

  • Pure SVG implementation (no external images)
  • Responsive design that scales with the browser window
  • Styled to resemble the traditional woodblock print aesthetic

About the Original Artwork

"The Great Wave off Kanagawa" (Japanese: 神奈川沖浪裏) is a woodblock print by the Japanese ukiyo-e artist Hokusai. It was published sometime between 1829 and 1833 as the first print in Hokusai's series "Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji". The image depicts an enormous wave threatening three boats off the coast with Mount Fuji visible in the background.

Technical Implementation

The visualization uses SVG paths, shapes, and gradients to recreate the distinctive elements of the original artwork, including:

  • The iconic curling wave with its "claw-like" foam at the top
  • Mount Fuji in the distance
  • The small boats threatened by the waves
  • The traditional color palette of blues and neutral tones

This implementation demonstrates the power of SVG for creating detailed artistic visualizations directly in the browser.
