Five apples initially appear as red circles in a bowl, then one is removed, and a later apple turns yellow to become a lemon. Using D3's update pattern, the visualization manually manages the lifecycle of SVG circle elements by applying an enter, update, and exit selection. The code uses D3's `select`, `scaleOrdinal`, and `range` APIs, alongside `setTimeout`, to orchestrate the sequential changes driven by a mutable fruit array.
