Population values are formatted with d3.format to abbreviate large numbers, and grid lines extend across the chart via the tickSize method. The visualization uses d3.csv to load data, d3.scaleLinear and d3.scaleBand for scales, and d3.axisLeft and d3.axisBottom for axes. It is rendered as SVG within a React framework.
