D3's general update pattern animates a bowl of fruit as apples are eaten and replaced with lemons. Using `d3.scaleOrdinal` for color and radius, circles enter, update, and exit with 1-second transitions. The code demonstrates data joins via `selection.data`, merging enter and update selections, and removing exit elements after shrinking their radius to zero.
