Five apples transition in and out of a bowl shape using D3's data join, with circles scaling from a radius of 5 to their full size over one second. Three timeouts drive the changes: eating an apple, replacing one with a lemon using d3.scaleOrdinal for color and radius, and filtering out another fruit. The SVG rendering uses enter, merge, and exit selections with transition and remove methods.
