Two SVG masks control the visibility of these line groups, with each mask containing a set of large, rotated path symbols drawn using `d3.symbols` and `d3.symbol`. The masks are layered so that the symbols cut through the striped patterns, creating intersecting circular and polygonal cutouts. The code uses D3's `select`, `range`, and `.join` methods to build the visual elements dynamically across a 100-point grid.
