This example displays the total number of global COVID-19 deaths as of the most recent date in the John Hopkins University time-series dataset. It fetches the CSV data from GitHub, sums the latest column values across all countries, and formats the result with commas using `d3.format`. The code uses `d3.csv` for data loading and `d3.format` for number formatting. A plain HTML page presents the message in a large `<pre>` element.
