This example shows a scatterplot of firearm background check permits over time, using data from a BuzzFeed News CSV file. Each circle marks a monthly observation, with points semi-transparent to reveal overlapping values along the time axis. The visualization is built with the Vega-Lite API, which wraps Vega and Vega-Lite, and relies on D3’s `csv` loader for data ingestion. Rendering uses an SVG view with a custom configuration for axis styling and font sizes, and tooltips are enabled via Vega Tooltip’s `Handler`. The code draws on the `vl.markCircle`, `vl.x`, `vl.y`, and `vl.tooltip` methods to define the encoding, with a fixed size and opacity.
