The map is rendered as SVG paths using `d3.geoMercator` and `d3.geoPath`, with geographic data loaded as TopoJSON from a GitHub gist and converted to GeoJSON features via `topojson.feature`. The React front end manages state and click handlers through `useState` and `useEffect`.
