The Heart of Prajñāpāramitā

This interactive visualization explores key Buddhist concepts from the Heart Sutra, with a focus on the relationship between Śūnyatā (emptiness) and Bodhicitta (the awakened mind of compassion).

The Connection Between Emptiness and Compassion

In Buddhist philosophy, Śūnyatā (emptiness) and Bodhicitta (the awakened mind) are profoundly interconnected:

  • Śūnyatā (Emptiness): The wisdom aspect that recognizes all phenomena lack inherent, independent existence.
  • Bodhicitta (Awakened Mind): The compassionate aspiration to achieve enlightenment for the benefit of all beings.

Their connection is central to the Mahayana Buddhist path:

  1. When we truly understand emptiness, we recognize that all beings are interconnected and lack separate, fixed identities.
  2. This insight naturally gives rise to compassion (Bodhicitta), as we see that all beings suffer from the same fundamental misunderstanding of reality.
  3. The realization that beings suffer because they cling to an illusory sense of self awakens our desire to help them.
  4. Together, these two principles form the "two wings" necessary for enlightenment: wisdom and compassion.

The visualization demonstrates this connection through various interactive diagrams, particularly in the "Wisdom & Compassion Union" view.
