Historical Timeline of Israel

This interactive visualization presents key events in the history of Israel from ancient times (around 2000 BCE) to the present day. The timeline is organized into three major historical periods:

  1. Ancient History and Biblical Period (2000 BCE - 70 CE)
  2. Medieval and Ottoman Rule (7th Century - 1917)
  3. Modern History (19th Century - Present)

How to Read the Visualization

  • The horizontal axis represents years, with BCE (Before Common Era) for events before year 0 and CE (Common Era) for events after year 0.
  • Events are color-coded by era and displayed as circles (single-year events) or bars (time periods).
  • Hover over any event to see details including the event name, date range, and a brief description.
  • The visualization is responsive and will adjust to your screen size.

What is CE?

CE stands for "Common Era" and is a secular alternative to AD (Anno Domini, Latin for "in the year of our Lord"). Similarly, BCE (Before Common Era) is the secular equivalent of BC (Before Christ). The numbering system is identical - 2023 CE is the same as 2023 AD, and 500 BCE is the same as 500 BC.
