Olympics Sports and Medals from 1896-2014

This dataset provides comprehensive historical data on the medals won in the Olympics from 1896 to 2014. It includes detailed information about the sports in which the medals were won, the specific events, the athletes who secured them, and the type of medal awarded (Gold, Silver, or Bronze). Additionally, it covers both the Summer and Winter Olympics, offering a complete overview of the countries represented and the gender of the athletes, allowing for in-depth analysis of Olympic performance across different disciplines and time periods.

I am combining the following 3 datasets for my final project:

  • Dictionary Dataset (Country Data):

  • Columns:

  • Columns:

    • Year: The year of the event.
    • City: The city where the event took place
    • Sport: Specific discipline within the sport.
    • Athlete: Name of the athlete.
    • Country: The country the athlete represents.
    • Gender: The gender category.
    • Event: The specific event or competition.

  • Winter Olympics Dataset (Country Data):

  • Columns:

    • Year: The year of the event.
    • City: The city where the event took place
    • Sport: Specific discipline within the sport.
    • Athlete: Name of the athlete.
    • Country: The country the athlete represents.
    • Gender: The gender category.
    • Event: The specific event or competition.
    • Medal: Type of medal won (Gold, Silver, or Bronze).

Usage

  • Medal Trends Over Time: Analyze how countries’ performances have evolved across different Olympic years.
  • Country Performance Comparison: Compare the number of medals won by different countries across various sports and events.
  • Athlete Performance Tracking: Track the achievements of individual athletes and identify the most decorated Olympians.
  • Gender Representation: Examine: the participation and success rates of male and female athletes over time.
  • Sports Popularity: Study which: sports have historically yielded the most medals and how their prominence has shifted over time.

Tasks

  • I want to see who are the top athletes in terms of medal counts in both the Summer and Winter Olympics.
  • I want to see what is the gender distribution among athletes in both Summer and Winter Olympics.
  • I want to see if there is a correlation between a country's GDP per capita and its Olympic success.
  • I want to see how has the performance of a particular country in the Olympics evolved over time.
  • I want to see how many medals have different countries won in the Summer and Winter Olympics.
