Emptiness and Form: Neural Emergence
An interactive 3D visualization exploring the Buddhist concept of "form is emptiness, emptiness is form" through the lens of neural structures.
Description
This application visualizes the human nervous system as a dynamic transition between states of emptiness/chaos and form/order. Users can:
- Explore different parts of the nervous system (CNS, PNS, neurons, spinal cord)
- Adjust the transition between emptiness and form using the slider
- View detailed information about neural structures
- Experience "Zen Mode" for a more contemplative visualization
- Interact with the 3D model through rotation, zoom, and selection
Philosophical Background
This visualization draws inspiration from the Buddhist Heart Sutra which states:
"Form is emptiness, emptiness is form. Emptiness is not separate from form, form is not separate from emptiness."
This paradoxical concept suggests that all phenomena are both empty of inherent existence and simultaneously manifest as form - two aspects of the same reality.
Controls
- Click and drag to rotate the view
- Scroll to zoom in/out
- Click on structures to view information
- Use the slider to control the transition between emptiness and form
- Select different neural systems from the dropdown menu
- Toggle UI visibility with the "Toggle UI" button
- Enter "Zen Mode" for a contemplative experience
Technical Implementation
Built with Three.js, this visualization uses:
- Particle systems for the transition between emptiness and form
- Wireframe representations of neural structures
- Dynamic neural connections that form and dissolve
- CSS2D for labeling and information display
